Two weeks ago, I didn’t know anything about the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. I couldn’t have even told you which ones were where, anything about the food the people there eat, their history, nothing really…
Santiago and I decided to do a 10-day trip to learn more about these countries that neither of us knew about, and we learned a lot! First, summer is a great time to visit these countries. The sun doesn’t set until 10:30pm and the temperate during the day is in the 70s and low 80s. Second, they have long and interesting histories that as an American was never covered in school. Many people from all three of these countries are living in other countries around the world, largely as a result of the wars, tortures and horrors that took place in their countries during the 20th century. Third, there are unique dishes to eat – potato dishes, soups, seafood, sweets. I enjoyed learning what people eat in the day to day in these countries.
There is a lot more I could write about each country, but I will first share a few photos from each of the capitals that we visited.
Tallinn, Estonia (3 days)
Riga, Latvia (3 days)
Vilnius, Lithuania (4 days)
I will be back in the US in a week, and looking forward to spending a few days with my family before moving up to Boston!
